An upscale homestay-style guest room, Jing ting is located one hour from Shanghai in the nearby water town of Zhujiajiao. The restored historic building is within walking distance of the attractions of the millennial village, like the Fangsheng Bridge and Kezhi Garden, but it is secluded enough for guests to enjoy a getaway from the hectic city life. This B&B offers its guests three distinct courtyards – as is the case with dwellings south of the Yangtze River – as well as nine rooms that are totally unique in form, size, layout and design. Each bedroom is also accompanied by its own tea room and private lounge.

Built at the end of the 19th century, the original Qing Dynasty building belonged to the Zhou family, but was later sold to the Yang family in the 1930s. Over the years, the space has been used for both for the wheat and furniture trade. Finally, in 2004, this historic conservation building was declared an immovable cultural relic by the Qingpu District authorities.

Current owner Ms. Jiang took over the house in 2018 and spent over two years completing the renovation process to preserve the natural structure, while enhancing it with modern comforts, like underfloor heating and control. intelligent light PAD.
Classes provide guests with a four-season experience, with sakura blossoms in the spring, lotus flowers in the summer, sweet osmanthus buds filling the air in the fall, and a blossoming plum tree in the winter.

While staying at Jing Ting, visitors can witness breathtaking sunrise views over the city from its own tea house, located on the river. Here, the local hush meet up every day from 3.30am to 8.30am to keep up with the latest gossip in the city and sample free local tea, a tradition that dates back to the original construction of the tea house during the Yuan Dynasty – there is more 700 years – which Ms. Jiang has perpetuated.

The tea house offers one of the largest tea selections in southern China, with over 100 varieties sourced from across the country; customers can choose their personal preference according to the season. Here, the tea masters present guests with a tea pouring ceremony, as well as breakfast in the morning and local snacks in the afternoon – such as youdunzi, or fried radish patties, and sweet cabbage, an elevated version of China’s famous street snack, the Stinky Tofu.
