This New England town named the most “family-friendly” in the United States

It’s a proud day for actors Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, Basketball Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing and the late Julia Child.

Cambridge, Massachusetts, has been named the most family-friendly city in the United States.

According to Opendoor digital platformBoston’s cross-river neighbor takes the top spot with its wide array of restaurants and outdoor activities, like a year-round farmer’s market.

The city’s education system also played a key role, as classes have a nine-to-one student-teacher ratio and rank 7th out of 240 in the state for classroom diversity.

Ironically, however, Opendoor reports that the most common reason Cambridge residents put their homes on the market is because they want a better school system. So…maybe the problem is your children!! Just kidding (sort of).

The main criteria Opendoor looked at were academic excellence, wide open spaces, and a small-town vibe. And that’s where I find myself quibbling a bit with Opendoor.

Academic excellence? Without a doubt. In addition to Cambridge’s exceptional school system, you have MIT and Harvard just a few stops apart on the Red Line.

But… Wide open spaces? How great is it to lay alongside a river that 30,000 Red Sox fans sing with joy after the team’s 11 victories?

How about a small town vibe? Since when does a small town have a subway?

I can’t remember many episodes of “The Andy Griffith Show” where Barney Fife pushes through a mime and a dance troupe to tackle a flasher. But then… I haven’t seen all the episodes.

So enjoy your victory, Cambridge. At least one Greater Boston area feature has secured the right to a duck parade in 2022.
