Wednesday Junior Sailing – RYA OnBoard

Registration is now open for Wednesday Junior Sailing, RYA OnBoard Center at Royal Lymington Yacht Club

Wednesday Junior Sailing (WJS) is the RYA OnBoard Center for local children which takes place at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club on Wednesday afternoons between April and September. The new WJS season begins on April 27, 2022.

Sponsored by Lymington Yacht Haven, WJS enables young locals aged 8-18 to learn to sail, plus a host of seamanship skills, including rowing and powerboating, for just £1 per session. In addition to water activities, sailors benefit from a buoyancy aid and enjoy a hot drink and a donut. There are two sessions: 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

In a stimulating environment, sailors work at their own pace following a card system which in turn can lead to RYA qualifications, from Stage 1 to Instructor Level. Find out how to become a sailor at WJS here.

Recent major studies have shown that stimulating sports and physical activity bring additional benefits in terms of social and personal development. In particular, sailing is known to enhance teamwork, determination, communication, independence, confidence, and creativity.

Wednesday Junior Sailing is run by volunteers who volunteer their time to help encourage the next generation of water users. All parents/guardians of participating children are welcome to volunteer, either on the water or ashore. The number of young people who can participate in each session depends on the number of volunteers. Find out how to become a volunteer here.

Ali Husband, manager of Wednesday Junior Sailing, said: “Now in its 37th year, our community sailing programme, Wednesday Junior Sailing, has trained thousands of children who would not normally have the opportunity to ‘water. This great initiative is supported by a team of volunteers who like to pass on the joys of sailing, rowing and seamanship to a new generation.

Rupert Wagstaff, Director of Lymington Yacht Haven, said: “The Wednesday Junior Sailing program has always provided local children with an invaluable opportunity to get in the water and experience the joys of sailing. Sailing is at the heart of Lymington as a town, so it’s wonderful that local school children have the chance to experience the sport from an early age. As the main supporter of this program for over 20 years, we have been privileged to see so many sailors take to the water year after year, with many becoming talented sailors and, in some cases, even champions. Olympics!
